crimescreenshotAs discussed during a Town Meeting last month, the Town of Walkersville will host a public hearing on crime in Walkersville. The public hearing has been schedule for September 9, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. in Walkersville’s Town Hall.

The meeting was proposed by Town Commissioner Chad Weddle, candidate for Burgess of Walkersville, after he agreed to do so as part of mediation with residents of Old Town Walkersville.

Those residents filed ethic complaints against Commissioner Weddle who, as a private attorney, represents the owner of a property on Fulton Avenue that has seen a very high number of calls for police, and the residents of the property as their defense attorney. The Walkersville Ethics Commission did not find a violation of the town’s ethics laws, but recommend mediation between the parties.

The Town Comissioners and Burgess remarked that they did not feel that a public hearing on crime was necessary when Commissioner Weddle made the proposal. Burgess Whitmore commented that there were only kids stealing change out of cars, and asked where the crime was.

During the meeting, they asked about drug use and distribution in the town and how to report suspected issues. In response to Burgess Whitmore’s questions of crime, residents recounted several recent episodes involving SWAT Teams, home invasions with battery, and open drug dealing. While not in Walkersville, recent homocides in Discovery were noted due to their proximity to town.

The Burgess and Commissioners invite all citizens to attend and express concerns with the elected officials and Maryland State Police Resident troopers.
